About the workshop
Awaji Baikondou Awaji Island
Awaji Umekundo has been in business since 1905 on Awaji Island, a famous fragrance-producing region. Fourth-generation owner Takayuki Yano and his skilled artisans continue to preserve traditional manufacturing methods. Rather than relying on machines, the craftsmanship is truly artisanal, carefully assessing the characteristics of natural ingredients while carefully kneading the incense. A week of natural drying, utilizing the strong westerly winds unique to Awaji Island, followed by a aging period of up to a year, results in a mellow, delicate fragrance. Made without any chemical glues and using only natural ingredients that are gentle on the body and mind, these incense sticks are imbued with the passion of the artisans.
